Understand the emission factors tab

Modified on Wed, 7 May at 4:50 PM

One crucial element of an effective carbon emission calculation tool is to work with an accurate, exhaustive, and adaptable database of emission factors.

If you are not already familiar with the concept, emission factors are coefficients that quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or removals related to a particular activity. Essentially, they provide a standardized way to calculate the emissions produced per unit of activity.

In an effort to remain flexible for a large number of industries and because emission factors can also change over time, we divided emission factor databases into two: base versions and report versions.

Base versions are templates on which to base your report version. For example, you could upload your own database specific to your industry as a base version, and then fetch it when creating your report version for a specific year.

Some base versions are already included in the tool, from our partner Climatiq.

When accessing the “Emission factors” tab on the left menu, you will land on the list of base versions. To access a base version, simply click on it.

There you will see the summary of all emission factors within the specific version, and you can access the individual emission factor by activity by navigating in the scope 1, 2 and 3 dropdown on the left.

You can view the number of emission factors per activity. Generally, an activity can have several emission factors because they would differ in terms of geography (e.g. Gas purchased in Brazil and Germany would have a different emission factors).

Click on the activity if you would like to see the emission factor(s) associated with it and their source.
